Professor Tülay Adali from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USA, has received the highly prestigious Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander-von-Humboldt foundation, which will enable her to spend several longer-term research stays at Paderborn University starting from next year. Prof. Adali is a world-leading researcher in the fields of machine learning, data science, and signal processing, with applications to mobile communications, neuroscience, and biomedicine, among others. She is currently Vice President of Technical Directions of the IEEE, the worldwide largest technical professional organization.

In Paderborn, Prof. Adali will collaborate mainly with Prof. Peter Schreier of the Signal and System Theory Group (Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics) to develop completely data-driven methods for fusing multiple sets of data, allowing these to fully interact and inform each other while minimizing a priori assumptions. A focus will be on identifying biomarkers for brain health and disease from medical imaging data. Prof. Schreier is delighted: “A Humboldt Research Award is of course first and foremost a recognition for the awardee. However, the fact that such an esteemed researcher has chosen the University of Paderborn to spend significant time here shows how attractive Paderborn is as a place to do science.”
