Pader­born Com­puter Sci­ence Pro­fess­or Re­ceives SI­ROCCO Award for In­nov­a­tions in Dis­trib­uted Com­put­ing

Prof. Dr. Christian Scheideler, head of the "Theory of Distributed Systems" group at the Institute of Computer Science at the Paderborn University , has received this year's SIROCCO Award for Innovations in Distributed Computing. The award is presented annually at the "International Colloquium on Structural Information and Communication Complexity (SIROCCO)" to scientists who make an important contribution to the understanding of the relationship between information and efficiency in distributed systems. Scheideler was honored in late June for his pioneering work in the field of so-called robust and efficient overlay networks. The decision was made by a committee formed by members of the Steering Committee of the SIROCCO conference.

The development of techniques for overlay networks is one of the most fundamental issues in the field of communication networks. Many distributed systems today rely on some type of overlay network to connect their participants. Scheideler was one of the first to recognize the importance of robust and self-stabilizing overlay networks, the laudation read. His research has laid rigorous algorithmic foundations for their study, exemplified by several key publications in the laudation.

Scheideler said, "I am very honored to be awarded this prize, especially since very well-known and successful people in the field of distributed systems theory have received it before me."

Among other positions, Scheideler was a postdoc at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., and a W2 professor at the Technical University of Munich before being appointed W3 professor at the Paderborn University  in 2009. He is (co-)author of over 150 publications in international conferences and journals and has served on over 70 program committees of international conferences. His central research areas are distributed algorithms and data structures, communication networks in their various forms, and programmable matter. Scheideler is also a member of the Collaborative Research Centre 901 "On-The-Fly Computing" at the Paderborn University.
