Introduction to the complex numbers

Leader of the workshop: Dr. Kerstin Hesse

Description: In the real numbers, the quadratic equation x^2 = -1 has no solution, but it does in the complex numbers. We will learn about complex numbers and their arithmetic operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Now, in the complex numbers, every quadratic equation (counted with multiplicity) has two solutions. For quadratic equations with real keofficients we can also prove this in general. Further we will see that complex numbers can be represented as points in the plane. The multiplication of complex numbers gets then also a geometrical view, which we will see however for time reasons only rudimentarily at an example. In addition to calculating with the newly learned complex numbers, you will also perform various smaller proofs of simple properties of complex numbers.
