Monitoring and Repairing Broken Ecosystems with Swarms of Robotic Surrogates

Ecosystems are currently breaking down all around the world, and the situation is especially dire if we look at insect, fish and bird species that are disappearing at an extremely high rate. In order to prevent a further decline of the bio-diversity and a total collapse of the environment, I think we can apply robots in three ways: monitoring, interacting and replacing. In order to do so, my lab studies the collective swarm-behavior of two highly endangered animal groups (honeybees and fish). Based on our observations we develop bio-inspired and bio-mimetic algorithms which we then use to re-embody animals with robots. In a recent experiment we established, for the first time in the world, an information flow between fish and honeybees, mediated by robots. This represents the first step to use robots to create novel -- or to recreate previously lost -- ecological connections between organismic species with the help of robotic species. Such type of technology might become soon crucial for ecosystem survival, or at least it might allow us to buy us the time we will need to solve our environmental problems in political and societal ways.
